Current sea level rise

This has occurred at a mean rate of 1.8 mm per year for the past century, and more recently, during the satellite era of sea level measurement, at rates estimated near 2.8 ± 0.4 to 3.1 ± 0.7 mm per year (1993–2003). Current sea level rise is due significantly to global warming, which will increase sea level over the coming century and longer periods. Increasing temperatures result in sea level rise by the thermal expansion of water and through the addition of water to the oceans from the melting of mountain glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets. At the end of the 20th century, thermal expansion and melting of land ice contributed roughly equally to sea level rise, while thermal expansion is expected to contribute more than half of the rise in the upcoming century. Values for predicted sea level rise over the course of this century typically range from 90 to 880 mm, with a central value of 480 mm. Models of glacier mass balance (the difference between melting and accumulation of snow and ice on a glacier) give a theoretical maximum value for sea level rise in the current century of 2 metres (and a "more plausible" one of 0.8 metres), based on limitations on how quickly glaciers can melt.

This issues is a great alarm to us human kind. Upcoming great rise of sea level may cause disasters like damage of houses living near the seashores and even worst is the occurrence of tsunami. The great reason of this rise of the sea level is mainly caused by global warming which in a little way we can prevent if we have that great concern towards our environment. Simple yet effective way of preventing global warming such as proper waste disposal, use of recyclable materials, replanting trees and others are of great help of saving our earth, avoiding such great disaster of the global warming and sea level abnormal rising. We should have great concern for we are saving not just our own lives but also we are saving millions of lives. CONCERN to our environment is such a great issue because undeniably and sad to say we, humans now don’t have that concern to where we live. We are just simply taking the situation for granted which in return we are the ones who are sacrificing. GOD has given up this blessing of nature and environment and we should always take care of it.

My Hero

A hero for me is an inspiration; we look at them as an image of greatness and perseverance. Often we do always think of a hero to a fantasy figure and extra superficial being which have great power; Spiderman, superman, batman and robin, etc. Also we do think of a hero as a celebrity and well-known people. Definitely I don’t agree on the thing that those fantasy figures and celebrity can be regarded as a hero. I regard hero as a person or even people who have done such a good thing to others or a community which is worthy for us to look unto and give recognition.

In my life, I have my parents as a hero. We do all look on our parents and we give our great respect to them. Always seeing their sacrifices and work for me to send in school, give my personal needs and other things good for me. For me they are worthy of such emulation and recognition. Even though they are not that perfect parents but for me they are working to attain that ideal parents. They are always giving me that discipline for they are caring for me most especially they have great dreams for me. Which in return I need also to work hard to pay back on what they are giving to me now.

We should always be aware on the sacrifices given by our parents. We should also do things which we think our parents be happy for this would be the remedy on the hard things they are doing for them to give our needs. And in the mere future we should also be heroes to our parents paying back what they have done to us. All of this is that I thank God for giving me such a good and caring parents which for me my HERO for a LIFETIME.

The island of Mactan

The most popular place nearby Cebu city is the island of Mactan. This place had played an important role in the Philippine history. Mactan is the most significant place of the first resistant of the Filipinos against foreign invasion and it is called the Battle of Mactan which Lapu – Lapu the first Filipino hero emerge.

On 16 March 1521, Magellan sighted the mountains of what is now Samar while on a mission to find a westward route to the Moluccas Islands for Spain. This event marked the arrival of the first Europeans in the Archipelago. The following day, Magellan ordered his men to anchor their ships on the shores of Homonhon Island. There, he befriended Rajah Calambu the chieftain of Limasawa, who guided him to Cebu. He, and his queen were baptized into the Catholic faith, taking the Christian names Carlos, in honor of King Charles of Spain, and Juana, in honor of King Charles' mother. To commemorate this event, Magellan gave Juana the Santo NiƱo, an image of the infant Jesus, as a symbol of their new alliance. As a result of Magellan’s influence with Rajah Humabon, an order had been issued to the nearby chiefs that each of them were to provide food supplies for the ships, and convert to Christianity.

Most chiefs obeyed the order. However, Datu Lapu-Lapu, one of the two chiefs within the island of Mactan, was the only chieftain to show his opposition. Lapu-Lapu had recently converted to Islam and refused to accept the authority of Rajah Humabon in these matters. This opposition proved to be influential when Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan’s voyage chronicler, writes, Zula, the second chief of the island of Mactan, sent one of his sons to present two goats to the captain-general, and to say that he would send him all that he had promised, but that he had not been able to send it to him because of the other chief Lapu-Lapu, who refused to obey the king of Spain.

Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula suggested that Magellan go to the island of Mactan and force his subject chieftain Datu Lapu-Lapu to comply with his orders. Magellan saw an opportunity to strengthen the existing friendship ties with the ruler of the Visaya region and agreed to help him subdue the rebellious Lapu-Lapu.

At midnight armed men of Magellan went to the island of Mactan to subdue the great Datu Lapu- Lapu and to bring Christianity in that area. Magellan had given ultimatum to Lapu- Lapu to obey the king of Spain and accept Christianity but Datu Lapu – Lapu refused to pay tribute.

Hens forth, next morning Magellan deployed armored men with swords, axes, shields, crossbows and guns, and sailed for Mactan in the morning of April 28. Filipino historians note that because of the rocky outcroppings, and coral near the beach, the Christian soldiers could not land on Mactan. Forced to anchor their ships far from shore, Magellan could not bring his ships' firepower to bear on Datu Lapu-Lapu's warriors, who numbered more than 1,500.

When morning came, forty-nine men leaped into the water up to our thighs, and walked through water for more than two cross-bow flights before reaching the shore. The boats could not approach nearer because of certain rocks in the water. The other eleven men remained behind to guard the boats. When they reached land, [the natives] had formed in three divisions to the number of more than one thousand five hundred persons. When they saw us, they charged down upon us with exceeding loud cries... The musketeers and crossbow-men shot from a distance for about a half-hour. Magellan then tried to scare them off by burning some houses in what is now Buaya, known then as Bulaia.

But this had only caused great fury to the natives that lead to the slow defeat of the army of Magellan. Many of the warriors attacked Magellan; he was wounded in the arm with a spear and in the leg by a kampilan. With this advantage, the Lapu-Lapu's troops finally overpowered, and killed him. He was stabbed, and hacked by spears and swords. Pigafetta and the others managed to escape.

Magellan's allies, Humabon and Zula, were said not to have taken part in the battle due to Magellan's bidding, and watched from a distance. Pigafetta reports that the Christian king Humabon sent a message saying that if they return the bodies of Magellan and his crew, they would give as much merchandise as they wished. Magellan’s body, however, was never recovered from the natives. Some of the soldiers who survived the battle and returned to Cebu were poisoned while attending a feast given by Humabon.

The great Datu Lapu-Lapu

Today, Lapu-Lapu is retroactively honoured as the first "Philippine national hero" to resist foreign rule, though formally the territory of the "Philippine Islands" had yet to be established or even named at the time. He is remembered by a number of commemorations: statues on the island of Mactan and the Cebu Provincial Capitol, a city bearing his name, and a local variety of red grouper fish.

There is a spot in Mactan Island called the Mactan shrine where the battle is re-enacted during its anniversary. In the same shrine, next to the Lapu-Lapu statue, there is a semi-destroyed obelisk erected in Magellan's honor by the Spanish colonial authorities and defaced shortly after the US military occupation of the Philippines.

Magellan is also honoured for bringing Christianity to the Philippines in general and the Santo NiƱo (Child Jesus) to Cebu in particular. The Magellan's Cross and the aforementioned Magellan's shrine were erected in Cebu City and Mactan Island. Many landmarks and infrastructures all over the Philippines bear Magellan's name, mostly using its Spanish spelling (Magallanes), which is also a widely used Filipino surname.

The success of Francis O'Dea

You've probably never heard of Francis O'Dea but if you live in Canada, you're probably very familiar with the coffee house company, "Second Cup".
Francis grew up in Toronto, Canada and was sexually abused at age 13 and around that time he’s starting drinking. Life quickly went downhill and before long he was homeless. He had to beg for change in order to survive. For 6 months he lived on the streets with no clue as to what he wanted to do or how to get out of his current situation.

But with his patience, hardworking and persevering attitude he had made into success and wealthy life today. Happily, today Francis O'Dea is a multi millionaire. As he says, "One year I was broke, the next year I was a millionaire." He changed his life by focusing on what he wanted. He got a job and slowly started to turn his life around.4 years later he opened a little coffee shop and called it "Second Cup". Second Cup is now one of the largest Coffee Shop chains in Canada.

These stories of sacrifice and hard work which in turn a story of success had been told several times in our lives. Many of us look on it as an inspiration that of what we are dealing now, the difficulties in life whether financially, emotionally and even spiritually. With this experience of others like what had happen to Mr. Francis O’Dea who had suffered the bitterness of life had that great courage within to overcome the problem he had and even sexually abused that’s a problem we can easily overcome but he had showed the courage within itself would always give well unto you.

Unforgettable Experience

They say experiences would teach us with different lessons. May it be good or bad, we can learn out of it. Others would cherish their experiences, remembering those times and use the lessons they learn whenever they would encounter that same situation.

In my 18 years of existence, I’ve been having hundreds of experiences. With all of this I can’t forget my experience in my freshmen life in Mountain View College located in Valencia, Bukidnon. It is not easy to live and pursue my college life away from my parents. Most especially that I am in a new environment, away from what I am used to, which in return I need to adjust. From the lifestyle, to my everyday routines, food, time management, obeying the rules and regulations of the dormitory and to the new people I have encountered all of this I need to adjust. In my 2 months of staying in that said place I had hard times of adjusting adding the loneliness away from my family. There is one time that I keep on crying in my bed because I can’t understand what I feel, I’m tired and lonely. But I don’t have any choice but to continue and strive to adjust and also do my best in my studies that’s why I worked hard balancing everything. Until I finally had adjust in my environment and I have lasted there for 1 year.

Hens forth, with that experience, I learned that it takes hard work and patience for you to adjust in a new environment you live. That’s why I am trying to learn in becoming patient and to get with others and understand on what they really are effectively I can adjust easily.

A CARPENTER’S GIFT

Based on the story entitled “a carpenter’s gift” there are two personalities being emphasized, the wall builder and bridge builder. Wall builders are those defined as the one who can build gap over two individuals and while bridge builder are those person who can serve as the instrument for reconciliation to individuals having bad relationships.

For me, it is better to become a bridge builder than to become a wall builder. Because situations like conflict between individuals deserves a bridge builder to act as a middle man, doing the best, to bring back that good relationship. You can be an effective bridge builder if you can learn to listen and learn carefully the situation, balancing it and doing what is most favourable one that can settle the problem. Morally and spiritually it is important to do righteous things such as to become an instrument for reconciliation. It can have good feeling when you are effective bridge builder. It has that innermost happiness and contentment seeing individuals’ building again there good relationship because of our effort. Realizing that we have fix such conflict and not throwing a wood on the fire which is not an righteous act. Remember that God had teach us to become righteous even in simple ways and we ought to do that.

No one stops to say Thank YOU!

Thank you, welcome, sorry, please, this are just simple and short words but as we express it to other people this can have great effect, giving that pleasure emotionally . If these words would just be said with sincerity and respect, I am sure hearing this one would make us feel relief and contented.

Manners, this is essential tool to build good relationship to others, even those who don’t know us and likewise we also don’t know. This is an important food to us when we are still a child. We are thought to live with good social graces. Sometimes a have realize how lucky am I that my parents had teach me with good manners and conduct that even today they have always remind me to possess that ideal manners, like always saying thank you and sorry, that I should not respond to what my parents discipline negatively and other things that I can realize how important. I know that changes is constant in our world today, but we should always think that social graces should remain to be significant to all of us, for this is the important tool to build such a good relationship towards other. And with that we can all be productive feeling good recognizing good manners to other people.

That’s why I always think that when I have my children in mere future, should teach them with good manners and when it comes the time that they will be grown up, they would possess that and seeing that makes me proud and contented.

The story of Hani

The short but inspiring story of Hani shows how a persistent and hardworking heart can overcome any difficulties in life. I saw the great perseverance of Hani, even though she is not that gifted in terms of English speaking ability, she had asked help in a professor in that famous university to teach her English language. For me it is not easy to ask help for teaching English language for free, it takes that inner courage, which I admired Hani. For she didn’t hesitate to ask help in order for her to overcome that weakness of having poor in English language and to aim for a scholarship in college, which the professor cannot believe Hani can get.

Hani for me is an inspiration. She had that weakness, financially and academically. But with her persevere and undying heart, she had set that goal and worked for the attainment of that goal. For me as a student, when there are times those academic difficulties would come, we need to think that problems have solution and we ought to work to solve it and like Hani we need to possess that perseverance. We need to think of that goal we set, and keep working on it.

Unlike Hani fortunately I have the opportunity to study in this known university, which in return needs diligence to finish. I need to work hard and never waste the opportunity to be here in MSU-IIT. I know I can do it with the guidance of God but sometimes there would be moments of laziness and discouragements, but like Hani I will do my best to overcome this and always ask God’s guidance for he will not always guide those who are willing to work for goodness.

My Mission in LIfe

Mission gives meaning and direction to one's life. It is a powerful guide in goal attainment.Only by realizing one's mission and doing hard for it, that's the time we can say that we are successful.

In my own I have a mission, a mission of having a good and stable life in the mere future. With this, realizing my mission I am like putting the pieces of a puzzle to make the word success. Being a young man in my age i am doing my best in my studies, wake up early to go in school, study my school lessons, doing my assignments and helping also my parents everyday. With this small things piece by piece I am doing my best to attain my mission. In working hard for my studies in future I can be successful finishing it. I can have my work and with constant patience I can see that I have attain my mission in life. But all things can't happen if God is not in me.
